Tombola Bingo have had their latest TV advertising campaign banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The advert, which features a white man in a suit and a black man in casual clothing on the beach, has been deemed to promote negative racial stereotypes. In the ad, the black man plays a ukulele and repeats everything the white man says in a song.

The ASA received complaints from two viewers about the Tombola Bingo advert and the complaints were upheld. The ASA said that the relationship between the two characters in the advert showed the white man to have power over the black man.

The fact that the white man was dressed smartly, as a professional, whereas the black man wore casual clothing, was also said to portray the black man as being less intelligent than the white man, particularly as he repeated everything the white man said.

The ASA felt that the advert may be considered by viewers to be humiliating and stigmatising, undermining the black character and thus causing serious offence.

Tombola Bingo have said that they will not be using the advert again in future campaigns, and the watchdog confirmed that the Bingo Site would have to change the advert to remove any negative racial stereotyping before it would be allowed back on television screens.
